ROCKWALL, Texas – A high-speed pursue from Rockwall to Waco ended when the suspect crashed his car after sheriff’s deputies threw down spike strips and shot at the car’s tires.
The pursue embarked around 8:30 Thursday night, after a traffic stop in Rockwall, East of Dallas. Several agencies followed a man driving a silver four-door Mazda from Rockwall County into Dallas, Ellis, Hill and McLennan Counties.
The car traveled at speeds up to one hundred miles an hour on Interstate 35. During the pursue, the driver went the wrong way, drove on the shoulder of the highway and went through a fence at one point to avoid police.
In McLennan County, tire spikes were thrown on the highway to attempt and stop the car. The driver continued going, with two of the car’s tires on rims. Sheriff’s deputies shot at the other tires and the driver crashed into a guardrail, near Waco.
“Two tires were spiked so he was running on two flats and after he spun out, hit the guardrail, he was surrounded instantaneously. He got out of the vehicle and was taken down, placed in handcuffs and taken into custody.” said McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara.
Fox Four’s Zahid Arab talked to the driver instantly after his arrest. The suspect identified himself as 26-year-old Jonathan Davis of Tennessee.
“Police pulled me over I guess because I was on my Iphone or something. I don’t know what happened. I am fresh to this state. I just moved here two months ago I didn’t indeed pay attention to don’t text and drive or whatever. So I did it and he pulled me over.” said Davis.
Davis admitted to having marijuana in his car.
“I’m done with people attempting to take my freedom because I smoke weed. You can drink it’s ten times worse,” said Davis.
Davis said he was posting to Instagram and using Snapchat during the pursue. Fox four looked at Davis’ Instagram account but did not find any posts related to the police pursue.
“It was undoubtedly a thrill. You go rapid in any car, race car track, here, it’s joy anywhere. I’m an adrenaline junkie,” said Davis.
Davis is facing charges for evading arrest, possession of a managed substance, marijuana possession and driving while intoxicated.
“This was a very dangerous situation, he put a lot of people in danger. This creep put a lot of people in danger including his own life,” said Sheriff McNamara.
