Early S-Cross buyers in for a treat as Maruti refunds Rs one lakh

After a tepid response to Maruti Suzuki`s very first Nexa launch–the S-Cross–the company slashed prices of the car to boost sales in January this year. This miffed its early customers. Maruti, now, is suggesting them a refund of almost Rs one lakh.

A customer–Samrat Chaudhuri–one of the early buyers of the car said that the company has sent him a cheque of Rs 90,000. He said, «I am one of the early buyers of S-Cross 1.6 Alpha and I was astonished to get a cheque of Rs 90,000 plus 2year/20000 Premium Maintenance Cost Protect package last week.»

In a bid to suggest premium cars and sales practice to its customers, Maruti Suzuki, last year announced the launch of Nexa–a high-end showroom. S-Cross was the very first car that the company sold from the outlet, followed by Baleno.

The company did not disclose the number of customer it suggested this refund to. Taking into consideration the Two,000 units sold of 1.6 variant of S-Cross till January 2016, the Rs 90,000 refund to customers would take the total amount it returned to Rs eighteen crore.

The spokesperson said that over 35% sales of Nexa have come from S-Cross so far, the rest from Baleno. «S-Cross is helping us achieve leadership in premium cross over segment,» he said.

To boost the lagging sales, Maruti Suzuki slashed prices of the crossover car by over Rs two lakh in January this year, merely four months after launch. While the price of the 1.6 litre variant was cut by Rs Two,05,000, the price cut on the 1.Three litre variant ranged from Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000.

This, naturally, did not go down well with the early buyers whom Maruti is now attempting to pacify with a refund an extended warranty and service contracts.

At the launch, the 1.6 litre option of the car was priced at Rs 11.99 lakh, Rs 12.99 lakh and Rs 13.74 lakh for the base, mid and top-end trims. It is now available at Rs 9.94 lakh, Rs Ten.94 lakh and Rs 11.Sixty-nine lakh respectively.

Similarly, the 1.Three litre variant was launched at Rs 8.34 lakh, Rs 9.15 lakh, Rs 9.99 lakh and Rs Ten.75 lakh for the four trims. These are now priced at Rs 7.79 lakh, Rs 8.49 lakh, Rs 9.59 lakh and Rs Ten.29 lakh respective (all prices ex-showroom Delhi).

«We have set an internal target of selling Four,000 to Five,000 units of S-Cross a month, and capacity can be ramped up or down depending on request,” Executive Director and Head of Marketing and Sales, T Hashimoto had said in an earlier report after launching the S-Cross.
